Physical books or e-books?

7/24/2017

Ever since the release of e-readers, readers all over the world have engaged in a challenging debate.  E-books or hard copies?  Typically, people feel strongly toward one side or the other.  Understanding the differences between regular books and e-books is important for deciding whether or not to purchase an e-reader.  I have now owned a iPad mini for a few years, so I am familiar with using an e-reader.  Hopefully, my comparisons will help you decide whether or not to go digital!

PHYSICAL BOOKS: The Pros
  • You have the (awesome) feeling of a book in your hand, and you get to experience every turn of the page.
  • They are easier to annotate if you are a student or blogger.
  • They can be autographed by authors.
  • Since they are not on a screen, they can be enjoyed even in the brightest sunlight.
  • Shelves full of books can create a great atmosphere for readers.
  • As time goes by, physical books can be passed onto others or exchanged for new books.
  • They never have to be charged, and they will never run out of battery.
  • Physical books can be purchased in bookstores which are THE BEST places.

PHYSICAL BOOKS: The Cons
  • It is much harder to carry around 100 books than 100 e-books.
  • They are sometimes more expensive than their digital counterparts.
  • You cannot read one in the dark without a special reading light.
  • Picking out specific keywords and phrases in the book may be difficult if the book is long.

E-BOOKS: The Pros
  • They are extremely portable.
  • Locating key words and phrases becomes simple with the search functionality available on most e-readers.
  • Books that are only printed in hardcover are sometimes less expensive if purchased as an e-book.
  • Access to a new book is as easy as a click of a button.  Books can be purchased from anywhere and download onto devices in seconds.
  • Many e-readers have screens allowing for the user to read books on the devices in complete darkness.

E-BOOKS: The Cons
  • It is harder to annotate e-books.
  • The batteries on e-readers need to be charged frequently.
  • They lack the "aesthetic" of having a full, physical bookshelf.
  • The actual e-reader devices are quite expensive.
  • You must have a device to access books. If the device breaks, you lose access to your books.

I hope my breakdown of the pros and cons of physical books and e-books helps you with deciding whether or not to purchase an e-reader.  Personally, I prefer physical books because I love how they feel in my hand, and I enjoy the satisfaction of turning every page.  Additionally, I really enjoy going book shopping!  What do you think?  Discuss your opinion in the comments below!  Also, be on the lookout for a book review later this week!
