October definitely hits my top favorite months of the year list! I love everything about it from the constant smell of pumpkin candles to the crisp crunching of leaves under my boots. I always enjoy celebrating Halloween with my friends and family, but it is hard to find spooky books that aren't actually scary! While I know a lot of readers love to dive into horror during October, I am not one of them. However, I do like to celebrate by reading books featuring monsters, magic, and witches! Here are a few of my favorite books for getting into the Halloween spirit without scaring yourself silly. 1. The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling Butterbeer, anyone? The Harry Potter series is a perfect read (or reread) for October! All of the books are full of magic and are amazing when paired with a cozy blanket and cup of warm tea. 2. The Shadowhunters Series by Cassandra Clare I actually just read the first two books of this series, and they were both incredible! The stories have a whole world of monsters and magic, and it takes place in modern America! They aren't scary, but they are action packed and impossible to put down! 3. Anything by Edgar Allen Poe The works of Edgar Allen Poe are great for reading right before bed because they are short and spooky! I have a book containing a collection of his works, and you will definitely find me reading them throughout the month! 4. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs This book has a creepy yet endearing mood and has a wonderful mixture of magic and mystery. I have not read the other two books in the series, but I know the first is a satisfying October read. 5. Hunted by Meagan Spooner I have talked about this book on so many posts, but it has been one of my favorite reads of the year! Hunted is a Beauty and the Beast retelling with a strong emphasize on the psychological struggles faced by the beast. The writing is beautiful, and I may reread it again before Halloween! Check out my full review here. Those are my favorite non-scary reads for the month of October! I am always on the lookout for new choices, so let me know of others in the comments!
